Memories of a Soul in the Underworld Chapter 30

Story Summary

Ethan is a soul in the Underworld with no memory of his life on Earth. He is bought and sold by various masters for centuries. Traveling from large industrial towns to scorching hot deserts. During his journey he picks up the skills, knowledge and magic to escape his enslavement. He runs with the intent of living a free life, but is pursued by agents until he's cornered on a remote mountain range. With little time left, Ethan begins to recount his life and masters in the hope of leaving a record of his existence. These are his memories.

A House on a Hill

Less than a century ago.

There was once a time where my existence almost came to an end. Perhaps it was just luck, or a greater power's plan, but I would no longer be here if certain events had occurred hours earlier.

It was all because of her. A housewife who lived in a crumbling three story mansion on a hill. Her home wasn't the largest I'd seen, but still had over twenty rooms full of dusty carpets and flaking yellow wallpaper. The estate was surrounded by large sandstone walls, with one wooden gate leading onto the street. It was always locked with a metal chain, and very few people walked in or out.

The housewife was a kind young woman with brilliant blue eyes, long blonde hair, freckled cheeks, and a laugh that brought me great joy. I once promised myself that I'd never become close to anyone again, but I slowly warmed up to her.

"Napoleon," she'd say with a smile whenever I returned, and thanks to her kindness I slowly regained some of my lost humanity.

Hades Teeth

61st day on the run.

My trembling hand gripped the ink pen so tightly that it almost snapped in half.

That day in the bakery happened so many years ago, but that arsehole's words continued to revolve around in my head for years (becoming more bitter and righteous with each recollection) until even I began to believe he was right.

Thanks to shitty people like that, I chose to passively accept my so called place in society, and allowed anyone to use me as they wanted. I thought things would be better if I just gave in and lived like a slave, no matter who was in charge.

The wind ferociously howled outside the cave entrance.

A savage blizzard forced me to take shelter in a gap in the mountain. The cave was only several meters deep and barely high enough for me to sit without slouching. Any mortal would have moaned about the cramped conditions, but it was enough for me.

Memories of a Soul in the Underworld Chapter 28

Story Summary

The Bakery

The start of my life after the factory.

My next master was a baker in the center of town. He was a large man in his late fifties with stark white hair and a neatly trimmed beard. I never once saw him smile, but fortunately for me, he was more concerned with business than torturing staff. The other souls often moaned about his tough work schedule and spontaneous temper, but after living in the factory, I was overjoyed to have him as a master.

The baker resided in a two story wooden townhouse like everyone else on that street. It was painted bright blue with a red tiled roof, looking outwards onto a dirt lane way. There was also a narrow balcony on the second floor. Always overflowing with colorful flowers which seemed to live forever.

The shop was located on the ground floor. There, we'd display various cakes behind sparkling glass cases. The baked goods were covered in cream, fruit, chocolate, or whatever was in fashion. All the townspeople loved to talk about fashion.

Memories of a Soul in the Underworld New Cover Art

I've recently been working on new cover art for my story "Memories of a Soul in the Underworld" (read it here http://mcqueenwrites.blogspot.jp/p/diary-of-soul.html) and the picture on the left is my best result so far. Please forgive my terrible drawing. My artistic skills are currently limited to drawing strange cartoons for small children.

I don't really have the money or resources to get someone else to make a cover for me, so I usually do it myself. There are plenty of stock photos out there that you can use for free, but the good ones do cost money, and the free ones aren't so good. I was also worried about rights. Therefore I decided to draw it myself.

I really wanted to draw a scene of Ethan walking through the snow looking all emotional, but I felt like an all white cover wouldn't really stand out much on a website with a white background like Amazon, so I decided to go darker colours.

I originally drew the picture in pencil, then scanned it onto my computer and coloured in with a paint program. It took hours and plenty of experimenting. Even now I'm not completly satisfied with the final result. I would have rather draw smaller lines and paid more attention to fine details, but this is an online story, so people will only see the small size. Therefore I thought it was better to draw a picture that was easy to understand when it was minimised.

My colouring is terrible, so I decided to deliberately ignore certain lines and go for a more rushed approach. I added some flames into his eyes to try and make it look like the fires of Hell were reflected in them. I'll add this picture to my Booksie and Fictionpress account, so feel free to let me know what you think. :)
